We tell ourselves stories constantly yet this process is largely unconscious. These stories are reflected in how we live our lives. We constantly pull feedback from the world around us to either validate or inform existing narratives or to create new personal narratives that manifest into reality. Although personal, my work is a reflection of this collective unconscious process and is heavily informed by the natural world, which I have found to be a profound reflector of the human experience. Guided by intuition and a process that is largely spontaneous yet investigative, I mine my own thoughts, experiences and bodily sensations to inform the abstract compositions and color palette of my paintings. Each mixed-media piece is a non-linear drama made of gestural strokes, marks and layers of color resulting in a visual representation of ephemeral sentiments, emotions and experiences. Every ripple, mark or the choice to use a variety of materials replicates life which is rarely black and white or uniform or void of texture.
K’era is a Los Angeles-based mixed media artist who continues to explore the art of abstraction in the form of collage and painting, oftentimes bringing the two together to create her delicately layered and dynamic pieces. She graduated from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a BFA in textile design, although she spent a great deal of her early professional career in public relations until returning to her artistic calling in 2016. Her artwork has been featured in a variety of group exhibitions within the U.S and can be found in private residences of collectors across the globe. When in the act of creating, time stands still for K’era. There is no past, there is no future but just the present.
In addition to her studio art practice, K’era collaborates with a weaving collective in Oaxaca, Mexico and one of the few remaining American mills in the US to transform her multi-media pieces into colorful woven decorative accessories for home interiors. Cozy, casual and comfortable, the woven home goods are an extension of K’era’s affinity for functional, decorative art made for everyday use and enjoyment. Her line, k-apostrophe, launched in 2017 and can be found in niche boutiques across the U.S. and in Europe. The brand as well as K’era has received various accolades and media attention including being named to and featured on the cover of Dwell Magazine’s annual emerging global designer issue in 2021.
